Can you believe it has been 16 years?
In the grand timeline of cinema, 16 years is a sequel gap. But in the world of digital video content, 16 years is an eternity. Sixteen years ago, if you told a teenager they would watch a three-hour live stream of a courtroom trial on their phone, they would have laughed.
Yet, here we are. Let’s rewind the tape to 2008 and fast-forward through the wildest decade and a half in the history of popular media.
As we moved into the 2010s, the wall between "Hollywood" and "You" crumbled. Popular media shifted from consumption to participation.
The average 16-year-old consumes over 7 hours of video content daily. Popular media is now a primary cause of adolescent insomnia, with "bedrot" (watching videos in bed for hours past midnight) becoming a normalized crisis.
Because engagement is the only metric, YouTube and TikTok often push users toward more extreme content. A 16-year-old watching fitness videos may quickly be fed content about disordered eating or steroid use. A curiosity in gaming leads to "alpha male" podcasts.
Passive viewing is over. For teen males especially, Twitch streamers like Kai Cenat or Speed are bigger than traditional celebrities. The appeal is parasocial interaction—the feeling that the content creator is a friend in the room.
Erik Erikson’s stages of development place 16-year-olds in the "Identity vs. Role Confusion" phase. Video content serves as a mirror.
No article on popular media for teenagers would be complete without acknowledging the shadows. The very algorithms that entertain also distort.
Contrary to the belief that teens only watch 15-second clips, YouTube remains the king of deep engagement. However, the format has changed.
