If you follow Wesley Schultz’s interviews closely (and I mean closely), you’ll recall a passing comment from late 2023. When asked about the band’s future sound, Schultz said: “We’ve been toying with something more… automatic. Less polished. Like the song writes itself before you even sit down.”
At the time, everyone assumed he meant a return to their raw, busking-in-Denver days. But what if he meant the album title?
Fast forward to 2025. The Lumineers are quiet. No tour. No singles. Just silence. And then, in early 2026, a .rar file allegedly appears on a private tracker. Name: lumineers_automatic_2025.rar. File size: 89MB. Description: just one word – “better.”
The .rar (a compressed folder, for the non-nerds) reportedly contains 11 tracks. Not the polished, string-drenched anthems we heard on Brightside or III. No. These are demos. Scratchy vocals. And that’s why fans are saying it’s “better.”
The official versions of these songs – allegedly slated for a real 2025 album called Automatic – were over-produced. Too clean. Too safe. The .rar leak strips away the studio gloss. In one leaked track (“Salt & Rust”), you can hear Schultz’s voice crack on the second chorus. In another (“Neon Fade”), someone (likely cellist/vocalist Jeremiah Fraites) laughs in the middle of a verse and they just… kept it.

No capitals, no context, no official announcement. Just a ghost of a file name. So, naturally, I went digging. And what I found is either a brilliant marketing stunt, a fan’s fever dream, or the first genuine folk-rock leak of the decade.
