The story begins with Anasuya, the wife of the sage Atri, who was renowned for her extreme devotion and chastity (Pativrata). Her spiritual power grew so great that it unsettled the heavens, leading the wives of the Divine Trinity—Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati—to ask their husbands to test her. 

The Divine Test: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva disguised themselves as wandering mendicants (Sanyasis) and approached Anasuya’s home while her husband was away. They demanded food but set a difficult condition: she must serve them while completely unclothed.

Anasuya’s Wisdom: Realizing these were no ordinary guests, Anasuya meditated on her husband and used her spiritual power to transform the three gods into three tiny, helpless infants. Since they were now babies, she could serve and care for them without violating her modesty.

The Result: When the goddesses realized what had happened, they pleaded for the return of their husbands. Anasuya agreed, and the three gods, pleased by her purity and intelligence, offered her a boon. She asked that they be born as her sons.
