Smartcarve 4.2 Software

| Feature | SmartCarve 4.2 | RDWorks (v8) | LightBurn | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Platform | Windows only | Windows only | Win, Mac, Linux | | UI/UX | Dated, functional | Very similar to SmartCarve | Modern, intuitive | | Design Tools | Very basic | Basic | Intermediate (offset, weld, boolean) | | Photo Engraving | Basic dithering | Basic dithering | Advanced dithering & Newtonian imaging | | Rotary Support | Yes | Yes | Excellent (easy setup) | | Cost | Free (with machine) | Free (with machine) | $60-$100 (one-time) | | Learning Curve | Steep (due to UI) | Steep | Moderate |

The verdict on comparison: If you have a LightBurn license, you will rarely touch SmartCarve again. LightBurn is objectively superior in almost every way except one: cost. SmartCarve is free and does 90% of what a hobbyist or small business needs, albeit with more frustration.

Click the "Start" (green play button) to begin the job. The software will stream data to the Leetro control card. The machine will ignore the computer keyboard inputs during this time, but you can use the physical stop/pause buttons on the machine console.

  • "The software crashes when importing DXF":
  • "Laser fires but does not move":
  • Launch the software and import your design file (File > Import or Open). Ensure your vectors are clean and properly colored according to how you want the machine to process them.

While it is not a full CAD suite, SmartCarve includes basic drawing tools allowing users to create simple shapes (rectangles, circles, lines) and edit text directly within the software. This is useful for making quick adjustments without returning to external design software like CorelDraw or AutoCAD.

Adjust chipload = feed / (RPM × flutes). Target chiploads from tooling data.
