Unlocking isn't just a technical hobby; it has real-world benefits.
✅ You live in a rural area with one weak 5G tower.
✅ You want to switch between T-Mobile Home Internet and a Verizon data plan.
✅ You are comfortable using cellmapper.net and manual antenna alignment.
✅ You need to mount the gateway outside for better line-of-sight.
If the previous owner reported the device lost/stolen or didn't pay their bill, the IMEI is blacklisted. Unlocking cannot fix this. You need to change the IMEI (illegal in many countries) or return the device.
Some users report that after an automatic OTA (Over-the-Air) update from the original carrier, the device becomes relocked. Solution: After unlocking, disconnect the gateway from the internet via WAN, or block the carrier's update servers in the firewall.
Some carriers throttle video, block VPNs, or monitor your traffic. By unlocking and switching to a more permissive ISP, you regain control.
The unlocked Nokia FastMile 5G 31 is the closest thing to a "Swiss Army knife" for 5G fixed wireless access. It is ugly, the software is barebones, but the radio performance and true SIM unlock are unmatched at this price point (~$150-250 used on eBay).
Pro tip after 6 months of use: Disable the internal Wi-Fi (it's weak) and use the 2.5GbE port to connect your own mesh system. Then, forget the Nokia exists.
Would I buy it again? Yes. My Starlink dish is now in storage.

PSA: Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 31 CAN be unlocked via code. Don’t fall for “free software” scams. Get IMEI → buy code → enter on SIM swap screen. Works on firmware 1.2+.
