In 2012, Sega did something unexpected: they revived Nights into Dreams—a cult Saturn classic from 1996—for Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) and PlayStation Network. It wasn’t just a quick port. It was a loving remaster, smoothing out the Saturn’s quirks while preserving Yuji Naka’s dreamlike "dual-plane" flight mechanic.

But for a niche subset of Xbox 360 owners—those with JTAG or RGH modded consoles—this XBLA release became something more: a symbol of preservation, customization, and running code Sega never intended to see the inside of.

Because the XBLA version uses a stripped-down Xbox executable and asset containers, the JTAG scene did what Sega never would: they unlocked the framerate (originally fixed at 60fps, but tied to physics—this broke things hilariously), injected Saturn-style scanline filters, and even restored the original Japanese UI.
