Title: Marmoset Toolbag 5.01 – Portable Setup / USB Drive Workflow?
Posted by: render_jockey
Board: 3D Apps & Rendering
Hey folks,
I’ve been trying to get Marmoset Toolbag 5.01 to run in a semi-portable way – specifically off an external SSD or USB-C drive so I can hop between workstations without reinstalling every time.
Before anyone asks: yes, I have a valid Pro license. Not looking for cracks – just a clean, portable workflow.
Here’s what I’ve found so far with TB 5.01:
What works (kind of):
Still problematic:
Has anyone successfully made a truly portable TB 5.01 build?
I’m talking:
Or should I just accept that Marmoset is meant to be installed per machine?
Cheers.

Official answer: Toolbag does not support portable USB execution. License is machine-locked. If you need mobility, use a laptop or remote desktop to a licensed workstation. We do not recommend registry or symlink hacks – they may flag your license.

I’ve done the symlink method on 5.01. Works fine for materials/settings. License still fails after 3-4 machine swaps. Best use case: carry the project files on USB, render on your main licensed PC remotely via Parsec. Portable Toolbag itself = not worth the headache.
Marmoset Toolbag 5.01, released in December 2024, is a unified, installed software suite for baking, texturing, and rendering, rather than a portable application. Key features include UDIM support, updated vector layers, improved bevel shading, and significantly increased performance. Detailed release notes are available in the Marmoset Documentation. Marmoset Toolbag 5.01 is a point release of the professional 3D real-time rendering, baking, and texturing suite, officially released on December 16, 2024. While Toolbag is primarily distributed via standard installers for Windows and macOS, there is no official "portable" version sanctioned by Marmoset. Users often seek portable versions for use without administrative installation rights, but these are typically unofficial third-party repackages found on file-sharing sites like Google Drive. Key Features of Version 5.01
This update built upon the major leap of Toolbag 5, adding quality-of-life improvements and specific tool enhancements:
Vector Layer Symmetry: Added symmetry support for solid and tube modes in Vector layers, allowing for mirrored designs and center-line snapping.
Bevel Width Masking: Introduced the ability to mask the Bevel Width setting with vertex colors, enabling different bevel sizes within a single material.
Performance Optimizations: Improved rendering speed for vector shapes with rounded corners and layers containing a high number of shapes.
Bug Fixes: Resolved critical issues, including anisotropic direction map painting and crashes related to hiding vector shapes in brush mode. Core Capabilities of the Toolbag 5 Series
Advanced Rendering: Features a revamped rendering engine that is up to 10x faster in ray-traced modes, along with a new Hybrid Render mode that balances speed and quality.
UDIM Support: Native support for UDIM workflows across baking, texturing, and rendering, making it more viable for high-end film and VFX assets.
Interactive Baking: Allows users to preview baked results in real-time as they adjust settings, significantly speeding up the look-development process. If you want, I can:
Vector Texturing: Non-destructive vector tools for adding geometric shapes like panel lines, pipes, and bolts directly in the texturing phase. Licensing Options
Official versions can be obtained through the Marmoset Shop under two main tiers:
Subscription: Offers continuous access to the latest updates (including future 5.x releases) for a monthly or yearly fee.
Perpetual License: A one-time purchase granting indefinite access to version 5 and all subsequent 5.x updates. Marmoset Toolbag 5 Officially Released
Assuming you successfully deploy a portable version, what kind of performance can you expect?
Minimum Requirements (Portable Scenario):
Benchmark Observations: | Scene Complexity | Installed 5.01 | Unofficial Portable 5.01 | | --- | --- | --- | | Simple asset (2M polys) | 240 FPS | 238 FPS (negligible diff) | | Pathtraced scene (8M polys) | 62 FPS | 48 FPS (due to shader compilation stutter) | | Texture baking (4K maps) | 45 seconds | 72 seconds (I/O bottleneck) |
Conclusion: A portable version works for look-dev and presentation, but heavy baking or animation playback will suffer from USB latency.
Place your portable Toolbag folder inside a Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive folder. On any of your authorized personal machines, you can sync and launch the identical environment. Texture maps, presets, and export settings remain consistent. Would you like a caption or a blog-style post
