The past decade has witnessed a “new wave” (often called the Malayalam New Wave) that has gained international acclaim. Directors like Lijo Jose Pellissery (Ee.Ma.Yau. – 2018, Jallikattu – 2019) and Dileesh Pothan (Joji – 2021) have pushed formal boundaries while staying fiercely local. No discussion of culture is complete without sadhya (the traditional feast), coconut-laced cuisine, and the sharp, witty Malayali humor. Malayalam cinema delights in authentic culinary details—from the puttu and kadala curry in Kumbalangi Nights (2019) to the karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish) in June (2019). The language itself varies by region and class: the northern Malabar dialect, the central Travancore accent, and the anglicized urban slang of Kochi. Films like Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017) masterfully use these linguistic nuances for comedy and character development. Moreover, the trademark Malayali sarcasm—dry, intellectual, and self-deprecating—is the lifeblood of many scenes, making the ordinary extraordinary.
For decades, films celebrated the sacrificial mother or the chaste wife. But the "New Wave" (post-2010) has produced radical departures:

Kerala’s high literacy rate, progressive land reforms, and strong communist tradition have profoundly influenced its cinema. Malayalam films have never shied away from class struggle, caste oppression, and political hypocrisy. The early works of legendary directors like Adoor Gopalakrishnan (Elippathayam – 1981) and John Abraham (Amma Ariyan – 1986) deconstructed feudal power structures. Later, films like Ore Kadal (2007) and Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016) subtly critique middle-class morality. Even mainstream superstars like Mammootty have anchored politically charged films like Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha (2009), which uncovers a buried caste murder. This willingness to confront social ills makes Malayalam cinema a chronicle of Kerala’s evolving conscience.
At NuID's core is an established cryptographic method to verify that a user can produce a secret value, such as a password or private key, without revealing that secret to anyone. Ever.
Instead of sharing this secret with an authenticating server, a cryptographic zero knowledge proof of the secret is generated on the client device. The proof is used to verify that the user input the correct authentication secret, without any private authentication data leaving their device.
Combining this capability with emerging distributed ledger technologies removes the need for users to trust anyone with their passwords and other authentication secrets, giving them ownership over their authentication credentials and, eventually, their digital representation across the web.
