Ly Chheng is married to Meas Sotheary, a former teacher whom he met while she was volunteering at a rural school. They have three children, all of whom have been educated in Cambodia, though they have spent time studying abroad in Australia and Japan. Unlike many dynastic business families, Ly Chheng has stated publicly that he will not force his children to take over the business. He prefers a meritocratic succession, where the most capable leaders—whether family or not—will run the Ly Chheng Group.
He is a devout Theravada Buddhist. He spends at least one week per year in a monastery, meditating and observing the Vassa (rains retreat).
