Kalavahana (also spelled Kala Vahana) means “One whose vehicle is Time” – a powerful epithet of Lord Kala Bhairava, the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva.
“Kalavahana Puja” is a special ritual performed to overcome obstacles related to time (kala), such as chronic delays, untimely events, planetary afflictions (especially Saturn/Shani and Rahu/Ketu), and fear of death or misfortune.

This puja is commonly done on Ashtami (eighth lunar day) and Rahu Kala periods, or during Bhairava Ashtami.

To understand the puja, one must understand the myth. According to the Shiva Purana and the Tantric Agamas, Kalabhairava is a fearsome manifestation of Shiva. To humble Brahma, Shiva created Bhairava from his third eye. Bhairava decapitated Brahma’s fifth head with his fingernail. However, as penance for the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin), Bhairava had to wander the cosmos as a Kapalika (skull-bearer). His only companion was a black dog.

Thus, the dog—Shvana—became the vehicle of Bhairava. The Kalavahana (Kala + Vahana) is the dog that carries the Lord of Time.
