Juuj’s economic heart. Every Monday and Thursday, thousands of goats, sheep, and camels are driven through the valley. It is dusty, loud, and chaotic. Watch Somaliland herders haggle over the price of a single ri ri (goat) destined for Saudi Arabia.
Unlike the coastal hellscape of Berbera (often exceeding 45°C/113°F in summer), Juuj enjoys a semi-arid highland climate. According to this Juuj Town Guide, the best time to visit is during the Gu (Spring) rains from April to June or the Dayr (Autumn) rains from October to November.

Juuj is located in the Lower Shabelle region of southwestern Somalia. It sits precariously on a narrow strip of land between the lush floodplains of the Shabelle River and the turquoise breakers of the Indian Ocean.
Standing at 25 meters, the Becco di Juuj (as the Italians called it) was built in 1928 during the Italian Somaliland protectorate. Although non-operational today, locals have preserved its structure. Climbing the spiral staircase (bring a flashlight) offers a panoramic view of the river delta meeting the sea—a perfect spot for sunrise photography.

The heart of Juuj is its weekly market (every Thursday). Vendors sell everything from handwoven textiles to sun-dried olives. Don’t miss the spice alley – the scent of cumin, paprika, and wild mint will follow you home. Juuj’s economic heart

Just 3 km east of town, the Juuj Gorge offers easy-to-moderate trails along a seasonal creek. Keep an eye out for endemic bird species and ancient rock carvings believed to be from the 12th century.

While Juja is booming, it faces challenges typical of rapid urbanization.
Juuj’s cuisine is a fisherman's dream. Because the town lacks industrial refrigeration, everything is "catch of the day."
