The first half is set in pre-Partition Lahore (now in Pakistan). It introduces a sprawling cast of characters—students, communists, capitalists, and families. Yashpal painstakingly builds the cosmopolitan culture of Lahore, showing Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs living intertwined lives. The "false truth" here begins as the illusion of permanent peace. The novel follows the protagonist, Tara, a modern, rebellious woman, and her lover, Purushottam. The tension rises as the political climate for Partition boils over.
