Because the animation is a big, telegraphed slam, good players will parry it on reaction.

The Tech: Cast Earth Piercer, but immediately press G (or your feint key) before the slam connects. You will cancel the spike. Why? They will see the fire on your fist and the startup, parry the air, and be stuck in the parry cooldown. Immediately cast it again. The second spike is guaranteed to hit.

Is Earth Piercer "Meta"? Not exactly. The standard Repulsion is safer. But is it cooler? Absolutely. Nothing says "I control the battlefield" like ripping a spear of lava from the earth and impaling a freshie trying to run from you at Miner's Landing.
