The story follows Light Turner (Nat Wolff), a high school student who feels powerless against the bullies and injustice of his daily life. One day, he discovers a mysterious black notebook dropped by a Shinigami (death god) named Ryuk (voiced by Willem Dafoe). The rules are simple: Write a person’s name while picturing their face, and they will die of a heart attack in 40 seconds. Additional rules allow for specific causes of death.

Unlike the anime’s Light Yagami—a cold, god-complex-driven genius—this Light is an awkward teen. He initially uses the notebook to kill his bully. When his crush, Mia Sutton (Margaret Qualley), discovers the notebook, she embraces its power with reckless enthusiasm. Together, they begin executing criminals under the alias “Kira.”

The world’s greatest detective, L (Lakeith Stanfield), enters the fray. L is portrayed not as the pale, sugar-obsessed eccentric of the anime but as a socially awkward, brilliant young man with a taste for candy and a theatrical flair. The film compresses the 12-volume manga’s intellectual duel into a 100-minute horror-tinged thriller, culminating in a ferris wheel showdown that diverges wildly from the source material.
