In the world of Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and internal IT teams, Datto is synonymous with Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR). We talk about the Siris, the Alto, and the SaaS Protection.
But there is a quiet, incredibly practical tool that separates "good" IT departments from "great" ones: The Datto Visio Stencil pack.
While Visio stencils might seem like a minor aesthetic detail, they are actually a strategic asset for documentation, network mapping, and client communication.
Once you have downloaded the .zip file (typically named Datto_Visio_Stencils_vX.zip), follow these steps: datto visio stencils
Step 1: Extract the Files
Right-click the zip folder and select Extract All. You will find a folder containing .vssx (macro-free) or .vssm (macro-enabled) files.
Step 2: Locate your Visio "My Shapes" Folder
Step 3: Copy the Datto Shapes
Drag and drop the extracted .vssx files into your My Shapes folder. In the world of Managed Service Providers (MSPs)
Step 4: Open the Stencil in Visio
Result: A new stencil panel will appear with all your Datto assets ready to drag onto the canvas.
Datto evolves its hardware rapidly. A stencil for a SIRIS 3 (circa 2016) does not accurately represent the port layout of a SIRIS 5X (current gen). Step 3: Copy the Datto Shapes Drag and drop the extracted
Best Practice: Before diagramming, verify your hardware generation. If an official stencil for a new device isn’t available, use the closest logical shape (e.g., a generic "Backup Appliance") and label it clearly, rather than using a deprecated shape that implies different connectivity.
Even with official files, you may run into problems. Here is how to solve them.
You have a new technician starting on Monday. If your documentation uses generic icons, they will waste 20 minutes searching the server room for a "grey box." If your diagram shows a Datto Siris 4 icon, they know exactly what they are looking for. Specificity reduces error.
With the acquisition by Kaseya, some legacy Datto assets have shifted. If you cannot find the official Datto stencils, do not use a generic server icon. Instead, use a custom shape with the Datto logo. Consistency is more important than photorealism, but official is always king.
Once you download the stencils, don’t just leave them in your Downloads folder. Here’s a pro move:
