Light energy is captured by autotrophs (plants, algae) via photosynthesis. This energy passes to herbivores and then to decomposers, eventually leaving the system as heat. Because a sealed bottle exchanges negligible matter with the outside, energy input (light) is the primary driver.

A well-made bottle biosphere can outlast its creator — some Victorian Wardian cases (sealed terrariums) have survived over a century with minimal intervention. Bottle Biosphere Guide

Add a 1-inch layer of gravel or sand to the bottom.

You do not need expensive lab equipment. Here is what you need for a standard 1-liter to 5-liter jar.

| Component | Why you need it | Best source | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Glass Jar | Clear, airtight seal (rubber gasket or cork is best) | Thrift store, IKEA, old pickle jar | | Drainage Layer | Prevents root rot (water reservoir) | Small pebbles, LECA balls, perlite | | Separation Layer | Keeps soil from sinking into gravel | Window screen mesh, activated carbon mat, cheesecloth | | Activated Carbon | Filters toxins, prevents mold | Aquarium store, pet store | | Substrate (Soil) | Nutrient base, low in fertilizer | Potting mix + sand + sphagnum moss | | Plants | Hardy, humidity-loving, slow-growing | Mosses, ferns, Fittonia, Pilea, Liverworts | | Cleanup Crew | Eats mold and decay | Springtails (essential); Isopods (optional) | | Water | Distilled or reverse-osmosis only | Grocery store (Tap water kills biospheres) | | Light Source | Energy input | LED grow light or bright indirect sun | You likely have most of these items around the house

Creating a bottle biosphere is a fascinating exercise in biology, chemistry, and patience. It is a closed or semi-closed ecological system that mimics the natural cycles of the Earth on a micro scale. When balanced correctly, these systems can survive for years with zero maintenance, cycling water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide in a perpetual loop.

This guide covers the science, materials, and step-by-step process to create your own thriving biosphere.

Close tightly. For glass bottles, use a rubber stopper or cork sealed with silicone or wax. The Substrate:
