You will hear a guide speaking to a group of visitors about the annual Beechen Festival. First, you have some time to look at questions 11–15.
Guide: Good morning, everyone, and welcome to this year’s Beechen Festival orientation. My name is Sarah Hartley, and I’m the volunteer coordinator.
Now, many of you have travelled from overseas, so let me give you a clear overview. The Beechen Festival is not your typical music festival. It started forty years ago as a small gathering of beekeepers and environmentalists in the county of Dorset. The name ‘Beechen’ actually comes from the Old English word for ‘to bless or hallow’ – not directly from ‘beech trees’ as many assume.
The festival is held every July, but this year’s dates are slightly different: from the 18th to the 22nd, which is a Tuesday through Saturday. Please note, there is no event on Sunday.
The main venue is Beechen Hill Farm. Unlike previous years when parking was free, this year there is a flat fee of £6 per vehicle, and all proceeds go to the local wildlife trust. Camping is included in your ticket price, but you must bring your own tent unless you booked a pre-pitched ‘Glamping Pod’ – those sold out in April. beechen festival ielts listening exclusive
There are four themed zones. The Honeycomb Stage features folk music. The Pollinator Pavilion hosts talks on organic farming. For families, the Meadow Maze is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. And finally, the Fermentory is an indoor area for mead and cider tasting – you must show a valid ID.
A key exclusive for IELTS candidates: listen for distractors. For example, the speaker mentions past parking fees, but the answer is the current fee: £6.
Now, let’s talk about the schedule for day one. At 11 a.m., the opening ceremony takes place at the Old Oak Stage. However, the first musical act, ‘The Swarming Bees’, begins at 2:30 p.m. not 2 p.m. – a common trick. Don’t be late.
For those interested in workshops, the bee-keeping demonstration has been moved from the morning to 4 p.m. due to the heat. And the cider-making class is fully booked, but you can sign up for the ‘Wildflower Walk’ at the information tent – that starts at 9:30 a.m. sharp. You will hear a guide speaking to a
Finally, a safety notice. Mobile phone reception is poor in the valley. In case of emergency, use the red telephone box next to the first aid tent – not the visitor centre. And the nearest hospital is St. Mary’s, about seven miles east.
That’s all for the orientation. Any questions?
