Batocera runs light, but you can strip it further.
Convert PS1, Sega CD, and Dreamcast .bin/.cue or .iso files to .chd. This saves 20–40% space with zero performance loss. Use chdman (included with Batocera or MAME tools).

If you fill up your 32GB drive with games, save states will eat the remaining space. You can mount a network share (NAS) to store saves. Edit the batocera.conf file (found in the boot partition) to add:

You should now see the Batocera splash screen. This is "Live Mode." The OS is running entirely from the USB stick.
