Apharan is an Indian Hindi-language action-thriller web series centered on kidnapping, crime, and dark comedy, following a disgraced police officer drawn into a complicated abduction plot that spirals into betrayal and moral ambiguity.
Released in late 2018, Apharan arrived as a refreshing surprise in the Indian web series landscape. At a time when most thrillers were focusing on gore and gritty violence, Apharan banked on tight storytelling, chaotic twists, and a heavy dose of dark humor.
Set against the rustic backdrop of Rishikesh, the series captures the essence of a classic 90s Bollywood thriller but with a modern, edgy narrative style. It is a story of a cop who becomes a criminal, a kidnapping that goes horribly wrong, and a mystery that deepens with every episode. Act 1 – The Setup Rudra is disillusioned
Apharan received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. While some noted that the plot stretches logic in places, the general consensus was that the show is highly entertaining. It was praised for reviving the "whodunit" genre in the digital space. The chemistry between the cast and the fast-paced direction by Santosh Singh were highlighted as major strengths.
1. The Writing and Pacing: Written by Varun Badola, the screenplay is the real hero. The series does not drag. With short episodes (averaging 20 minutes), the narrative is crisp. It respects the audience's time, delivering a cliffhanger at the end of almost every episode.
2. Dark Humor: Unlike heavy crime dramas like Sacred Games or Mirzapur, Apharan takes itself less seriously. The situations the characters find themselves in are absurd, and the dialogue is laced with sarcasm. This "thriller-comedy" balance keeps the tone light even when the stakes are life and death. and dark comedy
3. The Nostalgia Factor: The series uses a popular soundtrack, most notably the remix of the classic song "Baharon Phool Barsao," which plays during high-tension scenes. This creates a jarring but effective contrast that defines the show's unique mood.
The story revolves around Rudra Shrivastava (Arunoday Singh), a police inspector with a glorious past who has fallen from grace. Once a celebrated officer, he is now suspended, struggling with debt, and desperate to reclaim his dignity.
Rudra is approached by a mysterious woman, Anusha Tyagi (Monali Thakur), who offers him a lucrative deal: kidnap her sister, Ragini (Mahie Gill), to extort money from their wealthy father. Lured by the promise of money and the chance to clear his debts, Rudra agrees. However, the kidnapping goes awry, leading to a murder that Rudra did not commit.
Suddenly, Rudra finds himself framed for a crime he didn't fully commit, caught in a web of lies spun by the very people who hired him. He must navigate the dangerous underbelly of Rishikesh, dodge the police force led by his own former colleagues, and uncover the truth behind the real mastermind.
